Resting Heart Rate: What's Normal — and When Is It Worth Paying Attention?

A resting heart rate between 60 and 100 beats per minute is normal for most adults, but your baseline, fitness, medications, and rhythm often matter more than one number.

You sit down and check your pulse.

58 beats per minute.

Is that excellent fitness?

Too low?

Completely normal?

The answer depends on context.

The standard adult range is broad

The American Heart Association generally describes a normal resting heart rate for adults as:

60–100 beats per minute.

A rate above 100 is called tachycardia.

A rate below 60 may be called bradycardia.

But those labels do not automatically mean disease.

A trained endurance athlete may have a resting heart rate in the:

40s or 50s

and feel completely normal.

Someone taking a beta blocker may also have a lower pulse.

What sets your resting heart rate?

Your heart's natural pacemaker — the sinus node — generates the rhythm.

Then the autonomic nervous system continuously modifies it.

Resting heart rate can change with:

  • fitness
  • stress
  • sleep
  • fever
  • dehydration
  • medications
  • thyroid function
  • anemia
  • caffeine
  • illness

That makes heart rate a useful signal, but not a diagnosis.

Fitness usually lowers resting rate

Endurance training increases the amount of blood the heart can pump with each beat.

The autonomic balance of a trained person also tends to favor a lower resting pulse.

But lower is not always better.

A pulse of 42 with fainting or severe dizziness is very different from a symptom-free 48 in a lifelong cyclist.

Population studies find a relationship with risk

A 2016 meta-analysis combined 46 prospective studies involving roughly 1.25 million people.

For every additional:

10 beats per minute

of resting heart rate, researchers observed roughly:

  • 9% higher all-cause mortality
  • 8% higher cardiovascular mortality

after adjustment for other factors.

This is observational.

It does not mean deliberately forcing your heart rate down by 10 beats automatically reduces risk by 9%.

Higher resting rate may partly reflect:

  • lower fitness
  • smoking
  • illness
  • stress
  • autonomic differences

Your baseline is often more useful than a chart

Suppose your resting heart rate has been:

58–62

for years.

Then it becomes:

76–82

for several weeks without an obvious reason.

That change may be more informative than whether 78 technically sits inside the normal range.

Possible explanations include:

  • illness
  • dehydration
  • poor sleep
  • overtraining
  • anemia
  • medication changes
  • thyroid problems

Rhythm matters too

A heart rate of 72 can still be abnormal if the rhythm is irregular.

An irregular pulse can occur with:

  • premature beats
  • atrial fibrillation
  • other arrhythmias

Consumer watches can sometimes flag irregular rhythms, but they are not definitive diagnostic tools.

How to measure it

  1. Sit quietly for several minutes.
  2. Place two fingers over the radial pulse at the wrist.
  3. Count beats for 30 seconds and multiply by two.

If the rhythm feels irregular, count for a full minute.

For trend tracking, measure under similar conditions.

A resting rate between 60 and 100 is common and generally considered normal.

But interpretation should ask:

  • Is this normal for you?
  • Are medications affecting it?
  • Is the rhythm regular?
  • Are there symptoms?
  • Has it changed unexpectedly?

Treat resting heart rate as a trend from your cardiovascular system, not a score you need to “win.”
